The Art of Making Decisions

Decisions can have huge consequences. One decision, right or wrong, can change your career - even your whole life.

Yet, we aren't educated in how to make good decisions.

Our decisions are driven by qualitative interpretations of quantitative data. People interpret the data they receive, based on “feelings”. This is subjectivity.

Most people rely on common-sense, experience, judgment, gut-feel, etc. We firmly support this view. However, the massive information overload, choice overload, and human limitations, has created a problem for decision-makers.

Poorly defined objectives, uncertainty of information and multiple criteria & candidates, further complicate the decision-making process.

The solution is to incorporate analytics, into the decision-making process; we must also validate our decisions, through what-if analyses.

The good news is that this isn't difficult, it's a learnable process.

The speaker will present the common pitfalls we face; discuss the fundamentals that govern decision-making, and offer robust techniques to make better, defensible decisions.

In this interactive session, you will learn:

  • That in today’s world of information overload, common-sense, experience, and intuition is not sufficient.
  • Never to make any decision of consequence, without identifying relevant criteria (criteria segregation), and assigning weights in a defensible manner.
  • That all decisions must be able to withstand a sensitivity analysis (N-1, Analysis)
Take-aways: Learn how to...
  • Frame multi-dimensional real-world problems
  • Recognize the hidden traps that frequently lead us to behave irrationally and why we fail in making optimum decisions.
  • Reduce risk exposure by:
    • Validating decisions
    • Evaluating the decision's sensitivity to human bias or a changing environment
  • Apply a scientific process to decision-making:
    • Identify relevant criteria
    • Segregate the criteria
    • Assign criteria weights using the Analytic Hierarchy Process
  • Make better decisions than 95%+ of your peers.

The cost of not knowing what Errol teaches can be huge!
What makes matters worse is that you often don't know where you went wrong.

Don't Miss this 90-minute, info-packed meeting.
